Truman Doctrine Questions
1) What were the reasons that led the USA to getting involved in Greece and
Turkey?
The National Liberation Front was leading the rise of communism in Greece, where the economy was crumbling, and in Turkey, a weak government faced Soviet pressure. Britain announced it was withdrawing aid to these two nations, so it was not the US's responsibility.
2) What is the Domino Theory and how does it relate to this
circumstance?
Dean Acheson stated that more was at stake than simply Greece and Turkey. He felt that if Turkey and Greece fell to communism, then it would spread to other places like Iran and possibly India.
3) The Truman Doctrine can be called the beginning of Cold War Foreign
policy. Explain this
The Cold War was basically the US's struggle against the communist Soviet Union. Truman felt it was the US's responsibility to support free peoples who are resisting outside pressure, and the aid to Greece and Turkey began a longlasting anti-communism foreign policy that resembled the Cold War's main struggles.
